Types of Financial Aid
A grant is money that you dont need to pay back. SBVC offers a variety of grants.
- Complete the FAFSA or CA Dream Act application
- Meet basic student eligibility criteria
- Be considered a California resident or meet certain exceptions like AB540.
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA
- Complete all pending financial aid requirements (if applicable)
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Must be enrolled in at least 6 units.
Cal Grants are state grants that you do not have to pay back. They can be used at any UC, CSU, or California Community College and at many career and technical colleges in the state.
The California Student Aid Commissions (CSAC) will determine which grant(s) you qualify for after you apply. To learn more about the qualifications and different Cal Grants, visit the CSAC website. Students may access their Cal Grant information online anytime at WebGrants4Students. For more information on Cal Grant qualifications, how to apply, GPA verification and more visit, Cal Grant Frequently Asked Questions.
California Community College students who fail to meet the CSAC priority application deadline might still qualify for Cal Grant funding through the September 2nd application deadline.
A Cal Grant award is generally based on full-time enrollment (12+ units). If you are enrolled in less than 12 units for the term (fall or spring), your award will be adjusted accordingly. In order to receive any Cal Grant payment, you are required to be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units or more.
It is important to note that Cal Grant payments received after the term (fall or spring) has already ended will be based on completed units ONLY. Incomplete grades of W, EW, IA, IB, IC, IF, NP or IP will not be counted for Cal Grant payments for that term.
Students who completely withdraw from a term for which a Cal Grant payment was received will be subject to the state mandated return of any Unearned Cal Grant funds.
This means you may be required to return partial or all of your Cal Grant funds for the term. It is important that you consult with the Financial Aid Office for details on this state guideline and how partial or complete withdrawal impacts your financial aid eligibility.
The Cal Grants are offered by the state of California, for California resident students, and determined by the California Student Aid Commission (www.csac.ca.gov). There are two types of Cal Grants available at SBVC:
- Cal Grant B: This grant provides a living allowance for very low-income students. Cal Grant B awards at SBVC are currently $1,648 per school year for full-time students. The Cal Grant B is renewable for up to four years of full-time enrollment. Selection for the Cal Grant B is based upon having a minimum 2.00 grade point average and a composite score that takes into consideration family income, parents' educational level, single-parent household status and time out of high school. In order to apply for the Cal Grant, both a FAFSA or California Dream Act application and a GPA Verification form are required. SBVC automatically reports grade point average information for students who have completed at least 16.0 degree applicable units with a 2.00 or greater. The Cal Grant deadline for community college students is March 2 or September 2 of each academic year.
- Cal Grant C: Cal Grant C awards assist students in occupational or vocational programs with school expenses related to the program of study. The full-time, full-year Cal Grant C award is $1094. Funding is available for up to two years of full-time study in a vocational program. Verification of enrollment in a vocational program will be required to receive funds. To apply, file a FAFSA or California Dream Act application indicating the intent to pursue a vocational program of study and complete the Cal Grant C Supplement application that will be sent directly from the California Student Aid Commission. The Cal Grant deadline for community college students is March 2 or September 2 of each academic year.
- Students With Dependents (SWD): Students with dependent children who are under 18 years of age by July 1st of the award year and for whom the student will provide more than half of their support between July 1st and June 30th of the award year may be eligible for the following:

Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally subsidized employment program available to students who have demonstrated financial need based on information reported in their FAFSA. Employment opportunities are available in many different departments and offices, most of which are on campus. Priority is given to those students who have completed the necessary paperwork by the appropriate deadlines and are currently meeting all of the requirements to be hired. The length of a student’s employment under FWS funding is based on the student’s financial aid award, budget, and hours worked per week as well as their adherence to eligibility requirements.
This program allows students the opportunity to earn a portion of their college expenses through part-time employment during the school year. FWS funding is then used to pay student workers their wages once per month. All positions earn the current state minimum wage.
To be eligible for employment under the FWS, students must:
- Meet general requirements for Federal Student Aid
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Remain enrolled in a minimum (6) units
- Have enough financial need as determined by your financial aid budget
If you are interested in an FWS position, you may apply for a position online following the steps below:
Steps to apply for a Federal Work-Study position
- Go to https://sbccd.org/careers
- Click on "Browse Career Opportunities". Note: When you look online, please make sure that you note the location of the job. Both Crafton Hills College and SBVC federal work study jobs are on the same website.
- Once you select and click your desired job, a screen will appear at the top to your right prompting you to apply. If you’ve never applied for a position with our District, click on "Create an account" and set up a user ID and password. Once you have a user ID and password you can then access the application.
- You must complete the application for the job you are requesting and click on "Submit" to finish the application process. Your application may be considered for multiple positions; however, you will want to submit your application to each position that interests you individually to be considered.
- Once your application is submitted, you will be entered into the pool of applicants for each FWS job. Each department has different needs, so you will only be contacted if your application is pulled for an interview. Similarly, you may contact the department for which you’ve applied to introduce yourself and show interest in being selected for an interview for an FWS opportunity.
- Once you are hired, your supervisor will provide several hiring documents for you to fill out to begin the Human Resources portion of being hired.
- WAIT FOR FINAL APPROVAL FROM HR! Students cannot begin working until approval has been given to the supervisor by the Office of Financial Aid and Human Resources.
Students selected for an interview will be contacted directly using with the information each applicant has provided on their job application. Students can also contact the department for which they applied to follow up on the status of their application and demonstrate interest in the position.
Loans
When you receive a student loan, you are borrowing money to attend college and are responsible for repaying that loan plus interest and fees.
- Research Lenders: Compare different lenders to find the best interest rates, repayment options, and borrower benefits. Popular private lenders include banks, credit unions, and online lenders.
- Apply Directly with the Lender: Once you choose a lender, complete their online application. You’ll likely need a creditworthy co-signer if you don’t have strong credit.
- School Certification: After you're approved, the lender will contact our Financial Aid Office to confirm your enrollment and certify your loan amount, based on your Cost of Attendance (COA).
- Receive Funds: Once certified, funds are sent directly to the college in a form of a check which the student will pick up from our Campus Business Office.
- Important: Always complete the FAFSA first and explore federal, state, and institutional aid before considering private loans. Federal loans usually offer better terms and protections.
- Private loans are typically not need-based aid; they are credit-based and can be used to fill the gap between COA and other aid. Therefore, they typically do not count against the student’s need-based eligibility or show up in the EFA calculation. However, they are counted as a resource in the overall financial aid package to ensure the student doesn’t exceed the COA.
You are required to begin repayment:
- When you graduate,
- When you drop below half-time (fewer than 6 units),
- When you withdraw from all classes.
