In a decision focused on the long-term success of its football program and the well-being of its student-athletes, San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) has chosen to pause its 2024-25 football season. This proactive measure will allow the program to rebuild with renewed energy and purpose, positioning SBVC for a stronger comeback in its centennial year, 2025-26.

Despite low initial turnout, the Wolverines worked hard to field a team to open the season. But with player injuries mounting and the number of players falling below a safe level, SBVC’s athletics program chose to suspend football operations for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season in the interest of student safety.

“This was not a decision we came to lightly,” said Athletic Director David Rubio. “We were doing our best to find a way to continue the tradition of San Bernardino Valley football, but we can no longer ask our athletes to put their bodies on the line in games where they are outmatched in terms of total personnel available.”

The decision to suspend the football season came in consultation with SBVC President Dr. Gilbert Contreras and Interim Vice President of Student Services, Dr. Olivia Rosas, both of whom have been personally active in the effort to field a team for the 2024-2025 season.

“We understand how much our football team means to our students, alumni, and the community,” said SBVC President Dr. Gilbert Contreras. “This was a difficult decision, but it is ultimately the right one. Our commitment to student-athlete safety and personal development is paramount, and by taking this strategic pause, we are laying the foundation for a football program that will thrive in the years to come.”

Support for Student-Athletes Remains Strong

While the football team won’t be competing this season, SBVC is ensuring its athletes receive full support in every aspect of their academic and athletic journey. The Division of Student Engagement and Wellness has launched a special program to keep football players on track academically and physically, offering resources such as:

  • Academic Coaching and Mentorship: Ensuring all student-athletes stay on course for graduation and academic excellence.
  • Tailored Physical Conditioning Programs: Providing access to strength and conditioning training that prepares players for next season.
  • Career Development Workshops: Guiding students toward their broader goals, whether in athletics or beyond.

"Our football players are not just athletes—they’re scholars and future leaders," added Dr. Contreras. "During this season of transition, we remain focused on helping them succeed in every facet of their lives."

Looking Ahead: A Resilient Program for the Future

SBVC is already making significant strides to ensure a successful relaunch of the football program in 2025. The college is working to:

  • Investing in Coaching: SBVC is analyzing the salary schedule and job classifications of all coaching positions in Athletics.
  • Aggressive Recruitment Strategies: Collaborations with regional high schools, local clubs, and recruitment specialists will be strengthened so student-athletes prioritize SBVC as their college destination.
  • Engage the Community: SBVC will hold a community town hall in early 2025 to share updates, engage supporters, and gather input on building the future of SBVC football.

“This is not just about taking a year off—it’s about making an investment in the future,” said Dr. Contreras. “We’re using this time to ensure we come back stronger, with a program that embodies the spirit, resilience, and excellence that San Bernardino Valley College is known for.”

A Message of Gratitude

Dr. Contreras also expressed deep appreciation for the support and understanding of students, parents, alumni, and the community, as well as for Coach Nate Turner.

“We know this decision impacts many, but it’s made with a vision for a future where SBVC football stands as a model of excellence and determination. We’re incredibly grateful to our community for standing by us as we rebuild. We are also deeply thankful to Coach Turner for his leadership and support during this challenging time. He has really led the team with love and demonstrated a true commitment to the success of our student-athletes.”
