picture of giant redwood trees outside PS buildingThe landscape architect who consulted with the campus during the construction of the Physical Sciences (PS) building estimated the age of the two largest trees to be between 66 – 70 years old. That would mean that the trees were planted in the early 1940’s when the campus was only about 15 years old.

Throughout the two year construction project for the PS building, the coast redwood trees were preserved and protected with great care and represent some of the tallest trees on the entire campus.

According to the California State Parks, coast redwoods are popular along the southern Oregon and California coasts—but aren’t usually seen more than 50 miles inland. The trees can grow 2-3 feet annually, but when the trees are stressed from lack of moisture and sunlight, they may grow as little as one inch per year.
