Classified Senate Thanksgiving Drive Benefits Current and Retired Employees
The Classified Senate made Thanksgiving a little easier for five current and retired
San Bernardino Valley College employees.
The first Classified Senate Thanksgiving Drive was held in 2004 "in order to give
back to any classified employees that were having a hardship," Treasurer Phylicia
Sanchez said. Every year since, individuals, businesses, and groups like the Teamsters
Local 63 have donated food, money, and gift cards for the cause.
"Prior to the pandemic, classified employees and management would donate nonperishable
goods and turkeys to make actual Thanksgiving baskets," Sanchez said. "Due to the
virus, we wanted to keep everyone safe, so instead this year we asked for donations
to purchase gift cards for the families that are in need. We also wanted the families
to be able to purchase groceries to make their traditional Thanksgiving dinner."
There were 16 donors this year, and their gifts helped four current classified employees,
as well as one retiree. All of them were "very grateful for the assistance during
these difficult times," Sanchez said.
