SBVC Students and Faculty Recognized at 2017 Inland Theatre Awards
Last spring, San Bernardino Valley College’s Theatre Arts Department received 9 nominations and 6 awards from the Inland Theatre League (ITL), the largest association of theatre professionals in the Inland Empire.
The ITL Awards, held on April 23, 2017 at the Corona Civic Center, gathered more than 450 nominees from across Southern California, including actors, producers, choreographers, set designers, sound technicians, and orchestras. The ceremony acknowledged excellence in community theatre throughout the Inland Empire, with SBVC being recognized for its 2016 production of Avenue Q.
Saige Azaria, who played Kate Monster in the SBVC production, was one of only 30 nominees to receive the highest honor of The Founders Award. This award is presented to anyone who receives unanimous nominations from five judges, who attend all community productions during the 2016 theatre season.
Certificates of Excellence were presented to competitors, both on and off stage, who received the nominations of at least three judges. The winners of this award from the Avenue Q ensemble at SBVC included Arthur Gonzalez as Princeton, Gilbert Archuletta as Nicky, and Isaac Fonosch as Trekkie. Melinda Fogle-Oliver received an award for Directing, and Michael Gonzalez for Lighting/Scenic Design.
Other Avenue Q nominees with at least one vote from a judge included Jessica Burnett as Lucy, Luis Quintero as Rod, and Marissa Quintero-Gonzales as Christmas Eve.
Congratulations to all of our ITL nominees and winners!
The next production for SBVC’s Theatre Arts Department will be It’s A Wonderful Life. This heartwarming dramatization celebrates the American philosophy of life: hard work, fair play and the love and support of one’s family and community will be rewarded. Auditions will be held Monday, August 21, 2017 at 6pm in the SBVC Auditorium.
