If your Educational Goal(s) and objectives are to earn an Associate Degree and/or Transfer to the  University level, English 101 is a mandatory requirement. Similar to the most appropriate Math course for your Major, regardless of what that might be, you must satisfy this requirement with a grade of “C” or better. The results of your Guided Self-Placement will determine which English 101 option is most appropriate for you.

English 101 (without Supplemental Support)

This is a writing course emphasizing expository and argumentative essays, which helps students develop the writing skills necessary for success in college-level courses across the disciplines. It also includes instruction in library research and preparation of documented research papers. The course acknowledges the diverse identities of students through a variety of multicultural readings and student writing.

English 101 with English 686

English 086 is taken with English 101 and provides support for English 101, including strategies for college level reading, writing and critical thinking. This course is taken as pass/no pass only.

English 101 with English 687

English 087 is taken with English 101. It provides intensive support for English 101, including fundamentals for successful college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking. This course is offered as pass/no pass only.
