A grant is money that you dont need to pay back. SBVC offers a variety of grants.

Pell Grants are awarded based upon demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Department of Education, to eligible undergraduate student who have not already earned a bachelor's degree. Pell Grants do not need to be repaid. Students are automatically considered for a Pell Grant when they submit their FAFSA application online. For the 2024-2025 school year, Pell Grants for full-time students will range from $700 to $7,395. The amount of each student's Pell Grant will depend upon financial need, college costs and enrollment status. Students can receive only one Pell Grant per year, and Pell Grant funds may not be received from more than one college at a time. It is a students responsibility to come into the Financial Aid Office and deny their Federal Pell Grant at SBVC if they have already received or plan on receiving the Federal Pell Grant at another institution during the 2024-2025 award year.
San Bernardino Valley College participates in the FSEOG program. The maximum grant at SBVC is $1000 per year. Students must have exceptional financial need to qualify, with priority given to Pell Grant recipients. Unlike Pell Grants, there is no guarantee that every eligible student will receive a FSEOG award since funds are limited. These grants do not need to be paid back and recipients are determined by the criteria set by the Financial Aid Office.
The Cal Grants are offered by the state of California, for California resident students, and determined by the California Student Aid Commission (www.csac.ca.gov). There are two types of Cal Grants available at SBVC:

  • Cal Grant B: This grant provides a living allowance for very low-income students. Cal Grant B awards at SBVC are currently $1,648 per school year for full-time students. The Cal Grant B is renewable for up to four years of full-time enrollment. Selection for the Cal Grant B is based upon having a minimum 2.00 grade point average and a composite score that takes into consideration family income, parents' educational level, single-parent household status and time out of high school. In order to apply for the Cal Grant, both a FAFSA or California Dream Act application and a GPA Verification form are required. SBVC automatically reports grade point average information for students who have completed at least 16.0 degree applicable units with a 2.00 or greater. The Cal Grant deadline for community college students is March 2 or September 2 of each academic year.
  • Cal Grant C: Cal Grant C awards assist students in occupational or vocational programs with school expenses related to the program of study. The full-time, full-year Cal Grant C award is $1094. Funding is available for up to two years of full-time study in a vocational program. Verification of enrollment in a vocational program will be required to receive funds. To apply, file a FAFSA or California Dream Act application indicating the intent to pursue a vocational program of study and complete the Cal Grant C Supplement application that will be sent directly from the California Student Aid Commission. The Cal Grant deadline for community college students is March 2 or September 2 of each academic year.
If you were in Foster Care until your 18th birthday you may be able to apply for the California Chafee Grant and receive up to $5000 per academic year. Go to the California Chafee Web page and apply - www.chafee.csac.ca.gov. Recipients are determined by the California Student Aid Commission.
The new Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG) program, FORMERLY Full-Time Student Success Grant (FTSSG) AND California College Completion Grant (CCCG) for full-time Cal Grant B and C recipients at California Community Colleges. 

The Student Success Completion Grant pays Cal Grant recipients enrolled in at least 12 but fewer than 15 semester units $1298 per semester. Cal Grant recipients enrolled in 15 or more semester units may receive $4,000 per semester.

The maximum annual award for the Student Success Completion Grant is $8000.00.  Due to limited funding, the Student Success Completion Grant is refunded on a first come first serve basis.  Receiving a SSCG award does not guarantee a refund.  Funds are limited!

To be eligible for the Student Success Completion Grant, a student:

  • Must have financial need
  • Must be receiving the Cal Grant B or C (Fall/Spring)
  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 units during a primary semester (Fall/Spring)
  • Must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress
  • Must be a California resident or is exempt from paying nonresident tuition
  • Meeting the criteria above does not guarantee a payment, remember, funding is limited and is refunded on a first come first serve basis.
Failure to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress will result in program disqualification.

There is no application to apply, as long as you were awarded a Cal Grant B or C, you will be awarded the SSCG.  Reminder, funding is limited and is refunded on a first come first serve basis.

California College Promise Grant

The California College Promise Grant waives enrollment fees for eligible students. This grant does not cover mandatory SBVC Campus Fees, student is responsible for paying these fees.

  1. CCPG A: For students and/or a student's parent who are currently receiving some form of public assistance (AFDC, TANF, CalWORKs, SSI, and General Assistance). Proof of benefits received dated within the last 60 days may be submitted after submitting the FAFSA or California Dream Act application online, to be considered for a CA College Promise Grant A.
  2. CCPG B: Based upon current household size and total 2022 income for the student and/or student's parent(s). Income standards are provided by the state Chancellor's Office. Proof of total 2022 income may be required. A CCPG B may be awarded based upon the income and household size information provided on the FAFSA or California Dream Act application.
  3. CCPG C: Must demonstrate at least $1,104.00 worth of financial need in order to qualify.

Federal Work-Study

This program allows students the opportunity to earn a portion of their college expenses through part-time employment during the school year. Students are paid once per month and earn the current state minimum wage.

Employment opportunities are available in many different departments and offices, most of which are on campus. Every effort is made to place a student in a job related to their academic area of interest. Funds are not received unless the student works and earns them. SBVC receives a limited amount of Federal Work-Study funds from the federal government, so awards are not guaranteed.

If you are interested in the Federal Work-Study program, please contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if you meet eligibility. If determined eligible, after you have been awarded a Federal Work-Study award, you may apply for a position online at https://sbccd.org/careers 

When you receive a student loan, you are borrowing money to attend college and are responsible for repaying that loan plus interest and fees.

All students who are interested in applying for a private loan for educational purposes, are strongly encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before obtaining a private loan. San Bernardino Valley College will determine a student’s eligibility for federal student financial assistance and state aid, including Cal Grant B & C, based on the FAFSA results submitted to the college.

Students may also go to www.studentaid.gov for a listing of other federal student financial aid they may qualify for before applying for a Federal Direct Student Loan.
